Hello,

We are doing testing with vCloud Director 8.20 as part of our preparation to deployment in Prod Environment. Version information for components are provided below:

vCloud Director: 8.20

NSX: 6.2.5

vSphere: 6.0 U2

As of now i am facing couple of issues and wanted to know if other also came across this kind of issues

Issue1: When i try to import a virtual machine from vSphere into an existing vApp. I always get error "Class Java.lang.NullPointerException". I have tried different both chrome/Mozilla 32/64bit.

Issue2: I am looking for Client integration plugin for vCloud Director that will allow me to upload OVF/OVA/Media to vCloud Director catalog / Add vApp from OVA/OVF.

With chrome i always get error : Unknown Option: 'vCDBrowserType'

When i try to install CIP version 5.6 it never progress and gets stuck at below screen. I rebooted system multiple times but still does not work. Not sure if this CIP version will work as 8.20 is not listed in article

Download and Install the vCloud Director Client Integration Plug-In (2145401) | VMware KB

With Firefox I always get message to install CIP. I already installed CIP 6.2 available at below mentioned link. Even though i am not sure if it will work with 8.20 vCD version as this version is not listed

Download and Install the vCloud Director Client Integration Plug-In (2145401) | VMware KB

I tried following below mentione KB article but it didnt help

After updating Mozilla Firefox to Version 39 or later, VMware vSphere Web Client Integration Plugin 6.0 no longer functi…

NOTE: I have tried with both 32 bit and 64 bit browser of Chrome/Firefox

Anyone encountered these issues. Any plan by VMware to release CIP for 8.20 or existing one expected to work.

vCD 8.20 VMRC (vs vCD 5.5) and F5

Hi

We're about to embark on our first vCD 8.20 deployment, having had several years experience with vCD 5.1/5.5.  As with our current vCD 5.5 portal the vCD cells will be fronted by an F5 BigIP that will function as a load balancer and will also perform two factor authentication.

Our network guys spent considerable time trying to get VMRC working through the F5 (no connection to VMRC), ultimately concluding the problem to be the F5 not recognizing the VMRC session as being related to a valid (e.g. logged in to the F5) user session.  There appears to be no obvious session cookie or the like that can be used to relate a vCD user session to an attempt to initiate a VMRC, so the VMRC client gets presented with the F5 login page - this has led them to craft an inelegant workaround based on source IP address that they would strongly prefer not to continue with.

There appears to have been significant changes made to the VMRC between 5.5.x and 8.20, with the introduction of websockets and HTML5 however we have been unable to find anything that goes into the HTTPS and VMRC protocol in enough depth to be able to confirm how to proxy vCD 8.20 VMRC and whether our current setup will even continue to work.

Has anyone successfully configured vCD 8.20 with an F5 load balancer who might be able to share their experience?  Just to be clear that the F5 isn't just acting as a load balancer/proxy that exposes the vCD portal & VMRC to the internet - it is performing a user authentication before allowing anyone to reach the vCD portal so it needs to be able to relate your vCD browser session to the VMRC session you just initiated when you clicked on a VM from within it.

Thanks!

vcloud director 8.20 file upload fails

We are deploying a new Vcloud Director 8.20 for SP cell and are having a issue uploading files. I see the file get uploaded to the server nfs share and it shows 100% in the upload task, but only 1% on the catalog status page. This is the error I get every time.

[ df994315-e6c8-4151-ab9b-a7bfdd41c80c ] Internal Server Error

- java.net.SocketTimeoutException: connect timed out

- java.net.SocketTimeoutException: connect timed out

- connect timed out

Looking through the logs I see the following

at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:745)

Caused by: java.io.IOException: java.net.SocketTimeoutException: connect timed out

three or four times. . I am also seeing this in the logs.

No active collaboration found for task VDC_UPLOAD_MEDIA(com.vmware.vcloud.entity.task

No enabled endpoints for task VDC_UPLOAD_MEDIA

Currently there is only one datastore and it is shared to all my hosts. I reconnected vcenter and even tried different credentials.

Here is the succeeded upload and below is what I see in the catalog status. It never gets past on percent before it errors out.

I have tried files from 10KB up to 3Gb thinking it was a file size limitation. Every time it ends with this error usually in less then a minute.

I am out of ideas. Please let me know.

Thanks

Unable to connect Vcloud Director Web Page

Hello I change my laptop two weeks back, and now I don't have access to the Vcloud Director page for my company.

On my old laptop I get the screen attached by now on my new laptop I saw the following message:

This page can’t be displayed

Unable to authenticate via API on vCloud Director

$

I am having issues authenticating with the vCloud Director API. I am using the following cURL commands:

curl -i -k -H "Accept:application/*+xml;version=1.5" -u '[username]@[LDAP Domain]:[password]' -X POST https://[vCloud Director IP]/api/sessions

curl --request POST --url https://[vCloud Director IP]/api/sessions --header 'accept: application/*+xml;version=5.6' --header 'authorization: Basic [encodedCredentials]

and I get a '401 Unauthorized' return code. I am trying to connect to vCloud Director v8.10.0.3879706. The account I am trying to use in the cURL command is the same one I connect to the Web Portal as, which has System Administrator privileges. I have also tried connecting as an Organisation Administrator user in a specific VDC. I am able to get output from /api/versions, so I know the API is functioning.

Can anyone help locate the cause of this 401 return code issue? It seems to me it's a problem with how I'm formatting my credentials, but I can't find the exact issue. The credentials look something like this:

exampleuser@this.ldap.domain:Test$Pass%

Thanks.

vCloud Director Console Proxy

Hello

i think one of the most issues when w will work with the vcloud director is to get the console proxy working. I found many Blogs and Entrys to this issue. Is there at this time for vDC 8.2 a workaround ?

We have two VCD Cells Servers with an A10 Balancer. GUI etc is working. We have added the Public IP Settings. We can see on the balancer that traffic comes trough on the console proxy port. We have one workstation with IE 10 where the console works. The other testclients dont work wieth IE, Chrome oder Firefox.

When we debug in Firefox we see this

No Connection

vCloud scripting what permissions are needed for GetGuestCustomization?

$

I get to this part in my script,

$Vapp is a deployed V-App and is not null.

$custom = $Vapp.extensiondata.getguestcustomizationsection()

$custom.ComputerName = $JailName

$custom.UpdateServerData()

And I get an access denied on  $Vapp.extensiondata.getguestcustomizationsection()

Exception calling "GetGuestCustomizationSection" with "0" argument(s): "Access is forbidden"

vSphere 5.5u2

vCloud 5.x

Hence the question, what level of permissions do I need to accomplish this, is Power user good enough or do I need to be an Admin or something else?

Thanks

ConsoleProxy IP loosing connectivity

Guys

Over the past few days our secondary IP on our vCloud Director stops responding to ping request for know known reason.  Restarting the network script on the cell allows us to re-establish connectivity so users can connect to the console but this is on short term stop gap.  With the secondary IP going offline, our users are unable to connect to the console on the VM's.

Currently running vCloudDirector version 5.5.6.3814538.

Thanks

Change StorageSpace in Organisation VCD

Hello Cloud Guys,

we have just installed a fresh vCloud Director Infrastructur with 8.2.0. When we create an ORgVCD we can enter the max storage size for the customer on our datastore. example 100 gb for the vms. The issue was that we want to change the size later when the customer grow. But we cant do it in the OrgVCD. We found an storage whitepaper where there a screenshots that it would be possible to change.

In our Infrastructur:

StorageSpace.png

In the Whitepaper on Site 8 Figure 7 it looks better

http://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/techpaper/vmw-10q3-vcloud-director-storage-white-paper.pdf

Has anybody an idea to change the storage capacity?

Thanks

Problem Replicating with vCloud Availibility for vCloud Director

Im trying to set up a POC with vCloud Availibility. I have deployed everything and can connect to vCloud from the on-premise vcenter VR appliance. I can also configure a VM for replication, but when its supposed to start replicating i only get the below in the vcloud-container-debug.log on the Cloud Proxy Cell.  I suspect it has to do with the AMQP but i cannot figure it out. If i check the RabbitMQ server queues and etc it seems to be created.

Using vCenter 6 4541948

ESXi 4600944

vCloud Director 8.20

vCloud Availibility 1.0.1

Problem w\vCloud catalog template move to vRA 6.2.4 to use as template to create clone VMs

Hi,

We're migrating from vCloud director to vRA 6.2.4 and testing and prepping stuff and one of them is using the vCloud catalog "templates" to continue to create clones in vRA.

I'm having an issue with a couple vCloud director templates that I added to catalog and I removed the NIC and also unjoined from the domain before adding to vCloud catalog.templates.

The problem is when the team takes a copy in the VC and adds a NIC and converts it to an actual template to use in vRA the creation fails to complete because the new VM is still grabbing the original VM IP from the VM in vCloud that it was created from and not getting a completely new IP from the list in vRA.

Right now it only looks like its happening with Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 10. With Windows 2012 R2 and Windows 7 64b its been creating them fine and getting IPs and I have not had any issues with these from the same vCoud catalog.

Does anyone know why this keeps happening and if you have a solution? Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

I think I'm explaining it correctly but if it's not clear please ask for more info.

Thank you

remove cloud.uuid parameter without VM downtime?

Hello

I'm looking for a way to move VMs currently being managed by vCloud Director to vSphere managed without VM downtime.

I've found how to remove cloud.uuid using powercli:

$vmConfigSpec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineConfigSpec

$vmConfigSpec.extraconfig = New-Object VMware.Vim.optionvalue

$vmConfigSpec.extraconfig[0].Key="cloud.uuid"

$vmConfigSpec.extraconfig[0].Value=""

$vm.ReconfigVM($vmConfigSpec)

But I fail to have this taken into account, I tried to reload the vmx file and to vmotion the VM:

https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1026043

https://virtuallyjason.blogspot.in/2015/10/powercli-command-to-reload-vmx.html

http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2014/03/a-kitten-is-also-harmed-every-time-you-edit-a-vmx-file-by-hand.html

Is there a way to apply this change in vmx file without VM downtime ?

thanks

Question on Ghz reservation VS vCPU overcommitment

Hi everyone,

I have a concern regarding the relation between the % of CPU Ghz cycles defined in an allocation pool and the vCPU assignment and possible overcommitment.

Let's assume we are running latest stable versions of vCloud Director as well as the underlying vSphere environnement.

When it comes to propose virtual CPU ressources to customers, we ask them the number of vCPU's they need for their VM's.

In the pool (allocation type), 1 vCPU is defined at 2000Mhz. If the customers needs a total of 100 vCPU's for his VM's, a reservation of 200.000Mhz is defined in that pool.

Let's say that for the whole compute ressources we have a total of 316.800Mhz (144 cores * 2200Mhz).

Now, here comes the part which is not 100% clear for me :

In reality, VM's from that customer (with 100vCPU defined amongst them) are consuming maximum 20.000Mhz of computer power.

Question 1 : First of all, I guess the most logic (and transparent) way of working would be to ask our customers how many Ghz they are consuming on their current environment in order to size their cloud environnement properly ? If I was customer, I would not see the point of paying for 200Ghz when using only 20Ghz.

Question 2 : This allocation is taken into account ONLY under contention, right ? Which means that in case of a 20.000Mhz usage within a 200.000Mhz allocation, other VM's could use the remaining ressources regardless of the allocation model ?

Question 3 : about the CPU guarantee part : what does it mean exacly ? that under contention, the amount of clock cycles are given in priority to the VM's running in that pool ? what is the difference with CPU allocation ? What sense does it make to allocate ressources but not guarantee them ? or is it like some CPU thin provisionning ? like if the allocation works like a possible burst under non-contention but that the guarantee %age is kind of reserved ? Do I see this right ?

Question 4 : the difference between an allocation pool and a reservation pool is that the reservation pool guarantees 100% of CPU ressources ?

Question 5 : Let's say that we have 6 physical ESXi host's contributing to those 316.800Mhz. Those host's are splitted accross 2 datacenters. What happens if we loose 3 hosts ? The 200.000Mhz allocation pool exceeds the real computing power of the 3 remaining host's, will the concerned VM's HA failovered to the remaining 3 host's ?

Question 6 : What is the impact of vCPU overcommitment within an given pool regarding physical cores ? I guess CPU READY times who jumps up or is the impact less than before ? With 3 host I would only have 72 physical core's left when minimum 100vCPU's are alocated. But I guess it all depends of what those 100vCPU's are doing. If they work 100% performance will drop, if they work 10%, we won't see the difference. Is this right ?

Thank's for your help
